A Message from Pastor Calvin
So, you want to know more about that crazy guy who tries to help keep the folks at Port Orange Presbyterian Church focused on God’s mission! Well, that would be me. My official title says that I am the Head of Staff; which means if something goes well I get all the credit and if something goes south I get all the blame. The good news is that more often than not things go wonderfully around here. We have a dedicated staff of professionals who along with our session and elders, coordinate the ministry of all our members. Sure, sometimes overseeing 500+ enthusiastic and energetic people in service to God and our community is like herding cats, but our cats do great work and that is why I enjoy it here so much.
My real sense of call is to help lead this congregation on a journey of spiritual growth and Christian witness; helping our members and friends to find their gifts and then to use those gifts in service to the church and to our community. I enjoy exploring what it means to be a people in mission, locally and internationally, and finding ways to form partnerships across cultural divides. Many of those cultural divides are right here in our community – racial, generational, political and social – yet they are all still our neighbors whom we have been called to love.
As far as my bio goes, I am native of Port Orange, FL, born at Halifax Hospital back in the old days. I attended Columbia Theological Seminary for my Masters in Divinity, class of 1996, and received my Doctorate of Ministry in 2006. My wife Lee (née Hixon) and I both graduated from Spruce Creek High, class of 1978! We have traveled a lot and returned to Port Orange in 2008 to accept this call. We have three wonderful kids – Kristi Miller and her husband Matt, Nathaniel Gittner and his wife Katie, and Callee Gittner. My family and I love to travel and enjoy everything outdoors – we continue to be amazed at God wonderful handiwork.
I also enjoy getting to know people and talking about matters of faith. I would love to schedule a time to meet with you, share a cup of coffee and find out what God is doing in your life.
